Boy, This Sure Takes A Lot Of Time, Doesn't It?

So I've discovered the problem that no doubt millions of bloggers have discovered before me.

You write a post.

Someone comments.

You respond to that comment. The response is a little longer than the comment.

The commenter comments back about your response. The commenter unpacks your response, and answers it one paragraph at a time. This comment is longer than the first.

So you respond to that comment. And you answer some points-of-order in the latest comment, then you do a little more exposition, then you do a point-by-point rebuttal. This response is longer than your previous response, longer than either of the comments, and (often) longer than the original post.

Then your Doppelganger decides to drop in, or some of those guys whose ego you stroked last month. And then they start dropping big, long meaty comments. And then you have to respond to those too.

And before you know it, it's 11:20 at night, you've been ignoring your wife, kids, and pets, and you haven't even blogged yet! This is a minor tragedy, if you've been trying to keep to one post a day. (Ok, not so much of a tragedy. I've missed many days this month so far, and the sky hasn't fallen. Yet....)

Solution?

That's right: try a little Meta-blogging!

So. In the absence of other stuff to write about, be it known that I've done a couple of post-length comments tonight on my Good News for California Homeschoolers post and my economics post, The Enemy Is Us.

I've got some good conversations going in the comments sections of both of these posts. Be forewarned, however, that if you post a comment, you might get a response. And then you'll have to answer it.

And you, like me, might wind up with no life.

I think we're all going to need group therapy....

Yeah, I almost skipped commenting on the home schooling post entirely because I saw "debate" written all over it. I have't returned to read the rest of the comments. Out of respect to my blood pressure, I probably won't.

I call that "if you give a mouse a cookie" syndrome.

I look forward to your response.

I try to keep most of my blogging light, but then I have a few blogs where I comment that are more "meaty" (like yours and Java Jesus-http://caffecclesiology.blogspot.com/).

You're not obligated to respond to every comment that's made. Furthermore, I'm convinced that there are some people on this planet who do nothing but argue and you cannot convince them of anything. There's no "debate" just posturing. It drives me crazy, but I've learned to give up and let them have the last word.

But there are still some important debates that need to take place--even here in the blog-o-sphere. For instance, I'm quite certain that Arby is a buffoon who wears women's shirts while re-enacting his favorite scenes from old Starksy & Hutch reruns.

BRING ON THE DEBATE!!!! :)

See, this is why I mentioned group therapy....

Nope. Women's underwear. And it's Barretta. You can take it to the bank!

Generally I let posters post, and I *try not* to respond to them except to correct a misunderstanding (though I think I've violated that rule once or twice). The only reason I edit posts is because there's some maroon that occasionally writes anti-immigration garbage that has nothing to do with the post at hand. So to avoid that schmuck, I filter things first. Generally, though, I think having thoughtful disagreements in the posting section adds to the quality of the blog... that and I don't want to drive any of my two potential readers away. :)
